The History
On 22 September 1924, the Spiritualist Church of New Zealand Act was passed, encompassing the Seven Principles and the Constitution as they were then. Its enactment aimed to provide Spiritualists and Spiritualist churches in New Zealand with a sense of safety and security. Over the span of a century, much has evolved and transformed. It became evident that the organisation needed a constitutional update to adapt to these changes and better serve individuals interested in spirituality.
In 2017, with legal assistance, a revised constitution was drafted to better reflect the meaning of the Act in today’s society. There was a recognition that spiritual individuals no longer always affiliate with Spiritualist churches and that living spiritually can follow many different pathways. In acknowledgment of this, Spiritualism NZ expanded to welcome both individuals and spiritual centers/churches.
Commemoration
On 22 September 2024, we seek to honour the dedication of those who tirelessly advocated for the passage of this Act, as well as the progression and maturation of spiritualism in New Zealand since its inception. Our goal is to have numerous organisations and individuals partake in activities to commemorate this day, gaining insights into Spiritualism and the essence of living a spiritual life.
The Future
To preserve the significance of this occasion for years to come, we are using this celebration to launch National Spiritual Day, to be observed annually on September 22. Each subsequent year will feature a distinct focus, fostering ongoing exploration and understanding of spirituality.
