The Church of the Golden Light History

The Church of the Golden Light was founded on the 4th April 1931 by Mrs Fanny Philpott. The first service was held in a rented building in Belgium Street – now Upper Queen Street. However following much fundraising, they purchased their own property in 1935 at 100 Newton Road, and then ultimately they bought the section at 25 New North Road, Newton where the Church currently resides. The Church building was completed by 1955. The name ‘Church of the Golden Light’ was given to Mrs Philpott by Carlos a beautiful guide, and a Master in the Music world.

Mrs Philpott continued to lead the Church until 1960 when she died. And at that point Mrs Jeffries who had been an original member continued on alone. In the 1970s she handed the Church over to Mr.Laurie Anderson.

However, after some while Mr Anderson was ready to step down as Minister and he approached Mrs Mona Stillman who was already ordained and attending the Alliance Church in Carleton Gore Road Newmarket.

In time Mona also recognised that she would need to prepare someone who would eventually take over the Golden Light and in April 1986 Eve Higgins was ordained.

Eve ordained Glenys Lindsay on the 7th November 2007 and finally on the 12th November 2023 Melody Frascella was ordained by Glenys and has become the 7th Minister of the Church of the Golden Light.

Services are held each Sunday at 2PM with visiting Mediums, with a mid-week Circle on Wednesday afternoons.

So as we look forward to our 100 years in 2031 we congratulate SNZ on reaching this milestone.

– Glenys Lindsay, Minister.
